What is a basal cell carcinoma?
Surface epithelial tumour – caused by solar mutation p53 tumor-suppressed gene
Basal cell carcinoma appearance
- skin colour
- rolled border
- depressed centre
Basal cell carcinoma characteristics
- slow growth
- does not metastasize (only local destruction; does not invade blood/lymph)
Basal cell carcinoma treatment
removal
What is a squamous cell carcinoma?
epidermal tumour; does not come from normal skin (skin must be pre-malignant; e.g. sun damage, tar, ulcers, scar)
Squamous cell carcinoma cause and location
cause: sunlight, X-ray radiation, arsenic exposure
location: often head and neck

more malignant, invasive and spreads to lymph nodes. can spread
appears elevated, bleeds
