Appearance Enhancement
A term used to encompass a broad range of specialty areas, including hairstyling, nail technology and esthetics.
Continuing Education
Education that is employment or license related; used to motivate, enrich, update skill sets, satisfy licensing requirements, or further your career.
Cosmetology
The art and science of beautifying and improving the skin, nails, hair, and includes the study of cosmetics and their application.
Bacteria
One-celled microorganisms that have both plant and animal characteristics. Some are harmful and some are not.
Disinfection
Chemical products approved by the EPA designed to destroy most bacteria (excluding spores), fungi, and viruses on surfaces.
Local Infection
An infection, such as a pimple or abscess, that is confined to a particular part of the body and appears as lesion containing pus.
Pathogenic
Harmful microorganisms that can cause disease or infection in humans when they invade the body.
Contraindication
Condition that requires avoiding certain treatments, procedures, or products to prevent undesirable side effects.
Open Comedones
Also known as blackheads; follicles impacted with solidified sebum and dead cell build up.
Humectants
Also known as hydrators of water-binding agents: ingredients that attract water.
Effleurage
Light continuous stroking movements applied with the fingers or palms in a slow, rhythmic manner.
Petrissage
Kneading movement performed by lifting, squeezing, and pressing the tissue with light, firm pressure.
Tapotement
Also know as percussion; movements consisting of short quick tapping, slapping and hacking movements.
Epidermis
Outermost and thinnest layer of the skin; it is made up of 5 layers: Stratum Comeum, Stratum Lucidum, stratum granulosum, etc…
Dermatologist
Physician who specializes in diseases and disorders of the skin, hair and nails.
