Week 4 Terms & Study Flashcards
Chemistry
The science that deals with the composition, structures, and properties of matter and how matter changes under different conditions.
Organic Chemistry
The study of substances that contain the element carbon
Inorganic chemistry
The Study of substances that do not contain the element carbon but may contain the element hydrogen
Matter
Any substance that occupies space and has mass
Element
The simplest form of chemical matter
Atom
The basic unit of matter with a nucleus at the center surrounded by negatively charged electrons
Molecule
A chemical combination of two or more atoms in definite proportions
Element molecule
A molecule containing 2 or more atoms of the same element
Compound molecules
Combination of two different elements in fixed proportions
States of matter
Solid, liquid, gas
A physical change
A change in the form or physical properties of a substance, without a chemical reaction or the creations of a new substance.
Chemical change
A change in the chemical composition or make up of a substance this change is caused by chemical reactions that create new substances
Oxidation-reduction
Redox, is a chemical reaction in which oxidation and reduction take place at the same time
A pure substance
A chemical combination of matter in definite fixed proportion‘s
Physical mixture
Ex: air
Solution
A physical mixture of two or more substances in a solvent
Miscible
Liquids that are mutually soluble
Immiscible
Liquids are not capable of being mixed together to form stable solutions
Emulsion
An unstable physical mixture of two or more immiscible substances
Surfactant
Substances that allow oil and water to mix ex: cold cream
Volatile alcohols
Evaporate easily
Ammonia
Colorless has with a pungent Oder
PH
Potential Hydrogen
pH scale
A measure of the acidity and alkalinity of a substance, below 7=acidic solution above 7=alkaline solution
Logarithm
Multiples of 10
Finger waving
The process of shaping and directing the hair into an S pattern
Finger waving lotion
Liquid gel, makes the hair pliable
The base (curls)
The stationary non moving foundation of the curl, closest to the scalp
The stem (curls)
The section of the pin curl between the base and the first arc (turn) of the circle
The Circle (curls)
The part of the curl that forms to complete a circle and a wave
Open center curls
Smooth waves and uniform curls
Closed center curls
Produces waves that get smaller towards the ends
