What is intersectionality?
A theory of interlocking oppressions that states that those who are most marginalised in society are those who fall under multiple forms of minority social stratification,
What is discrimination?
Unfavourable treatment based on prejudice, especially regarding ethnicity, gender, age, or disability
What is social exclusion?
Various ways in which an individual or group of individuals are denied access to levels of citizenship, social association and wealth available to others
What are disadvantages associated with mental illness?
- Labour market disadvantage
- Hostility from media
- Poverty
- Lawful discrimination
What is stigma around mental health?
A notion that mental illness is something to be avoided, hidden away or shameful
What is self-stigma?
Internalising negative beliefs where individuals or groups experience fear, shame or hopelessness which keeps them from seeking social support, employment or treatment for a mental health condition
What is the bio-psycho-social approach?
- The environment, cultural, social family, emotional and spiritual aspects of a person’s life
- Hope, respect and caring throughout the therapeutic relationship.
- Challenges prejudice, inequality and injustice associated with racism, ageism, sexism and heterosexism at interpersonal and societal levels
What is the whole person approach?
Encompasses the biological, psychological and sociological aspects of the person
What are the four key questions for a whole person approach?
- What is the person’s concern or problem?
- To what extent does it distress the person?
- To what extent does it interfere and in what way, with everyday living?
- To what extent is the person able to exercise any kind of control over the situation?

What is interpersonal interaction?
A communication process that involves the exchange of information, feelings and meaning by means of verbal and non-verbal messages, between two or more persons
What do you assess for appearance and behaviour?
Posture, self-care, distinguishing features, rapport, attitude

The content of their ideas, volume, rate, tone
What do you assess for mood subjective?
