Week 9 (surveys & questionaires) Flashcards
What is an ad hoc type of survey?
A single purpose survey
What is an omnibus survey?
Multipurpose - topics must be comparable
What is a self-completed survey?
May be done through postal service or through internet
How can interviews be administered?
A trained person can administer either through the phone or face to face
What are the limitations of surveys?
Bias of self report: memory, knowledge, social desirability
Poor quality information
Sample bias: low response rate
Interviewer bias
What are some strengths of surveys?
Low cost Confidential Standardised Generate large amounts of data Amendable to multivariate analysis Saves time
Explain process of questionnaire development and design
Conduct preliminary work
Eg. Literature consult with experts in the field, conduct qualitative studies
Determine hypotheses, research questions, theoretical framework and variables
Compile research questions: comprehensive, short, unambiguous, not leading, not negative, appropriate
Pilot draft questionnaire
Revise questionnaire
What are the types of response?
Multiple choice Numeric open end Text open end Likert scale Visual analogue scales
How does face validity relate to surveys?
Do the items appear to be measuring what you what
Explain content validity in relation to surveys
Extent to which the specification of the test actually reflects the purpose of the test
Are the items inclusive and relevant
Items must asses every aspect of a construct which is evidenced in the literature
Explain concurrent validity in relation to surveys
It is the correlation between a new test and existing tests which claim to measure the same construct
What is factor analysis?
Factor analysis is a way to condense the data in many variables into a just a few variables.
Factor analysis is a way to take a mass of data and shrinking it to a smaller data set that is more manageable and more understandable
What is one way to calculate whether questions on a questionnaire are reliable is to calculate what?
Chronbachs alpha - measure of internal reliability
Is it important that all items on a questionnaire are positively worded?
No.
