Week 9 - Conditions of Practice Flashcards
What is the power law of practice
Performance improves with the amount of practice, but at a decreasing rate. This means you improve much more at beginning
What is part and whole practice?
Part practice is practicing parts of the movement seperately and whole practice is practicing the whole movement at once.
Which is more effective part or whole practice?
Part can improve whole movements and is more effective for serial movements (series of movements)
What is massed practice
Practice is done in one block, with no rest between trials
What is distributed practice
Practice is done in intervals with rest between trials
Which is more effective massed or distributed practice?
If the amount of practice is held constant, performance and retention is improved more by distributed practice.
What is blocked practice
All the practice trials for each task are done together
What is random practice
The practice trials are completed randomly
What are open skills
skills which are inherently variable and in which the environment changes
What are closed skills
Skills in which the environment is constant and can only be performed in the same way
Which is more effective open or closed skills?
In acquisition, performance is better in blocked practice. In retention, performance is better in random practice.
What is mental practice
learners imagine doing movements alongside physically doing movements. Much more effective if the learner is guided through it
What is contextual interference
Function interference in learning responsible for memory improvement.
What does variability of training do?
increases retention and transfer
