Week 9 - Attention and concentration Flashcards
What are the 3 dimensions of attention?
Divided attention
Concentration/selective attention
Selective perception
What is concentration
Concentration is one dimension of attention
It refers to a person’s deliberate decision to invest mental effort on what is most important
What is the central resource capacity theory
Several activities can be carried out at the same time, provided that their total effort does not exceed the available capacity.
What is the multiple resource theory
If two tasks make use of different resource pools then people should be able to perform both without disruption
What is the late selection theory?
All stimuli are fully/partly analysed and selection only takes place for the purpose of the response
What is selective attention?
Resembles a mental beam that illuminates a part of the visual field and the rest is ignored
(spotlight theory)
Four types of attentional focus (Nideffer 1976)
Broad
Narrow
External
Internal
What are the two types of distractors?
Internal
External
Internal distractors
Living in past
Concentration on technique
Self-talk
Fatigue
External distractors
Visual
Auditory
Gamesmanship
Breaks in play
Techniques to enhance concentration
Cue words/self talk
Pre-performance routines
Simulation training
Thought stopping
What is foveal vision
2-5 degrees of visual field
Refers to vision in the centre of the field of vision
Types of eye movements
Fixation - 200-300ms
Saccade - 30-80ms
Smooth pursuit - 0ms
What is static visual acuity?
The ability to pick out detail in a stationary object
Tested through snellen eye chart
What is dynamic visual acuity?
The measure of visual acuity, factoring in time and motion
