What is an emergency?
an unexpected occurrence or set of circumstances demanding immediate action
What are the two types of emergencies?
Naturally occurring: disease epidemics, weather conditions, etc.
Caused by humans: explosions, accidents, fires, chemical and oil spills, riots, terrorism, acts of workplace violence,
What are the government response to an emergency?
first: Local emergency organizations: municipal emergency services, and emergency measures organizations (EMO)
Second: Each province and territory: emergency measures organization (EMO)
Third: The federal government and its agencies
What are the two central aspects to emergency planning?
emergency preparedness, and response to emergency
What are the emergency planning issues at the 3 stages?
Precontact stage:Assessing hazards and planning potential responses.
Contact stage:Evacuation, caring for the injured people, and ensuring emergency response.
Post-contact stage: Dealing with the emotional trauma of an emergency and issues regarding the orderly return to work.
What are the necessary elements in managing emergencies?
emergency plan, evacuation plan, emergency manager, fire plan, medical attention plan
What is an emergency manager?
a senior person (generally the plant manager) in charge of all emergency activities.
What is a fire plan?
has same characteristics as the main emergency plan
What causes fire?
heat, fuel, oxygen =chemical reaction
What are the 4 stages to fire prevention and suppression?
- incipient stage: a source of ignition and fuel come together
- smoldering stage: fuel, oxygen and heat are present, causing the heat to rise
- free-burning stage: flames first appear
- uncontrolled fire stage: fire is out of control
what is a structural design?
the construction of buildings meets relevant requirements, e.g., fire codes
What are barriers?
walls and floors can delay or prevent the spread of fire
what is detection and supression?
every building has a detection system that senses heat and smoke.
What is storage?
combustible materials are rated and stored in separate or isolated areas
What are the post contact efforts focus on?
helping individuals deal with the stresses of experiencing or witnessing an emergency situation
getting back to “normal” operations
