Abel Tasman first european to discover Aotearoa
What happened in: 1769
Cook & de Surville arrived in Aotearoa within weeks of each other. Cook had a Tahitian.
What happened in: 1769-1835
First contact. Māori began trading with Pākehā. Mutually beneficial relationships. Māori adopted literacy.
What happened in: 1814
Guns & Bibles introduced, first missionary sermon in the far north
What happened in: 1820
Hongi Hika & Waikato travelled to Britain to write the first Māori dictionary. Swapped gifts for guns and returned.
What happened in: 1835
Declaration of Independence “Te Wakaputanga o Te Rangatiratanga o niu tireni”. Iwi & Hapu from the far north to hauraki gulf signed. First time Māori people united
What happened in: 1840
Treaty of Waitangi. Now an official colony of Britain.
Why is the Declaration of Independence an important document for Māori?
It was the first time they were recognised as a nation. B/c of this their ships could trade legally and not be seized by customs in other countries. This was the first time that iwi were unified for trading. Their autonomy was recognised.
What circumstances led to the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi?
Māori wanted their own sovereignty but also wanted the British colonists to be controlled by British crown. Māori wanted recognition for trade. British wanted it b/c there were other foreign interests here. Māori thought that it would help w/ land retention, but this did not happen. “Hellhold of the Pacific”
