Religion was already a way of life through the concepts of tapu & noa for Māori people. Therefore, it was less of a stretch & they only needed to adapt the Christian teaching to their already rigid social restrictions. Even the Creation Narratives are similar.
What led to the rise of many Māori prophetic movements?
Māori prophetic leaders brought the two worlds together: wove together beliefs & practices with Biblical & Christian ones. Plus Missionaries educated the Māori people who became prophets.
When & where was the first Christian sermon held in Aotearoa?
1814 held the first Christian sermon in the Bay of Islands. Samuel Marsden & translator Ruatara.

1833-Papahurihia in Bay of islands a matakite (seer) attracted many followers he called them Hūrai (Jews) & criticised the protestant missionaries. Later became Hone Heke’s Tohunga.
