A

Religion was already a way of life through the concepts of tapu & noa for Māori people. Therefore, it was less of a stretch & they only needed to adapt the Christian teaching to their already rigid social restrictions. Even the Creation Narratives are similar.

A

Māori prophetic leaders brought the two worlds together: wove together beliefs & practices with Biblical & Christian ones. Plus Missionaries educated the Māori people who became prophets.

1833-Papahurihia in Bay of islands a matakite (seer) attracted many followers he called them Hūrai (Jews) & criticised the protestant missionaries. Later became Hone Heke’s Tohunga.

1850s Te Hura (woman’s name). Hawkes Bay an old woman received a divine message conveyed through her dead child & Moses. She offered healing. Good example of how for Māori, ancestral & biblical worlds merged.
