A
- 1 in 4 care for elder family member
- women provide most of the unpaid care
- adversely affects: their jobs and careers, their own physical and emotional health, other family relationships and responsibilities
- increased use of home care services, respite, but these costly services are insufficient to meet needs

Why is the family meal important?
A
- symbol of shared family life
- organizes the family, contributes to physical, mental, and social well-being
- provides structure to the day
- place for socialization of children
- meets nutritional needs of family members
- involves a number of tasks and activities/shared work that can contribute to family solidarity

What is happening to the family meal?
A
- people still want and value family meals, but patterns of eating are changing in response to work roles and technology
- from 3 meals/day to ‘grazing’
- food available 24/7 outside the home
