What is direct suicide, indirect suicide, and psychological autopsy?
- DIrect (overt self destruction behavior): premature death in a short period of time (gun, hanging, drowning)
- Indirect (covert self destructive behavior ): death over an extended period of time
(medication, smoking, refusal to eat/drink) - Psychological Autopsy: retracing the “psychological steps” of the person whose death is questionable
(psychache: unbearable psychological pain)
What are some additional details about suicide 2020 final death data?
- 125.6 suicides per day, 1.4% of deaths
- More people die from suicide than homicide
- Persons 85+ have the highest rate, then 25-34, then 45-54, then 75-84
- Person most at risk: white male not married
- American Indians have the highest rate among minority groups 14.6%
- More veterans die by suicide than combat
What are the suicide rates in the black community?
- Every 6.6 hours/day, 1 African dies to suicide
- Suicide rates for children 5-11 have surpassed whites
- Third leading cause of death for those 15-25 years of age

Jack Kevorkian – who was he and what did he do to achieve notoriety?
A Michigan jury last month found Dr Jack Kevorkian guilty of second degree murder in the death of Thomas Youk, a 52 year old resident of Detroit who had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Dr Kevorkian made a videotape of himself injecting Mr Youk, who was paralysed, with lethal chemicals last September.
