Week 8 Flashcards
Who Implemented the Controlled Drugs And Substances Act?
Jean Chrétien (1996)
What are substances based on?
1) Whether they have a currently accepted medical use in treatment
2)Relative abuse potential
3)Likelihood of causing dependence when abused
What is Substance - Use Disorder?
A cluster of cognitive, behavioural, and physiological symptoms that manifest with compulsive drug taking
What is Substance-Induced Disorder?
Specific physiological and behavioral symptoms of intoxication, withdrawal, and mental disorders as a result of using the drug
What is Pharmacokinetic Tolerance?
Involves the increase in the rate or ability of the body to metabolize a drug
What is Pharmacodynamic Tolerance?
It involves the body’s adjustment to a drug and how it attempts to achieve homeostasis
What is the VTA system do?
- Receives input from the sub-cortical attention systems
- Understanding how environmental cues might be related to rewards
What does the Nucleus Accumbens do?
IS connected to feelings of reward and is elevated DA from drugs
What is Nociception?
It is when the body is injured, pain-sensing neurons are released that can respond to injuries
What is Neuropathic pain>
It is caused by a lesion or dysfunction of the nervous system
What’s First Pain?
Immediate sensory component
what is secondary pain?
It is the emotional component
What does anesthetics do?
They reduce all sensations by depressing the CNS and producing unconsciousness
What do Analgesics do?
They Reduce pain without producing unconsciousness.
How do Analgesic drugs modulate pain?
1)Reducing the peripheral inflammatory response to injury
2) Blocking glutaminergic NMDA receptors in the spinal cord
3) Reducing repetitive activity in injured neurons
4) Modulating spinal cord through activation of inhibitory endorphin or GABA neurons
5) Modulating central processing of pain stimuli
