Most people can only afford beer and light wine, people are also spending less money on alcohol. Reemergence of public drinking. The day Ontario goes wet the taps run dry.
2.Who was E.P. Taylor and how did he disrupt the Canadian brewing industry?
The disruption occurs with the consolidation of the industry and rationalize their operations, started selling full strength beer to Hull. He buys 17 breweries in Ontario and controls 33% of the market.
3.What was John Labatt kidnapped and what effect did it have on the Labatt Brewery”
It ultimately boosts the sales of the brewery, because of Labatt’s name in the press. Was basically free advertisement for Labatt at the time where advertising liquor was illegal.
4.What was “Black Christmas” and how did the brewers help create a culture of moderate drinking in Canada in its aftermath?
They were able to blame prohibition on the fact that, because of prohibition people did not learn to drink responsibly.
R.B. Bennett (1870-1947) 1
Loses office before depression, runs on the message of restoring economic prosperity, he blames a natural downturn in the business cycle, stopped large government spending. Conservative prime minister, promises jobs for every Canadian. Born on east cost of 1870, goes to law school and moves out west. His popularity declined during his term.

E.P. Taylor (1901-1989) 2
Born into a wealthy family, father was an investment banker, one of the wealthiest Canadians, leaves Canada in the 60s and sparks the popularity of lager in England. Also engages in illegal trading.
Brading Brewing 2
First brewery E.p. Taylor owns and is the corner stone, he reorganizes the brewery, decides to make full strength beer and sells it to Hull.

Part of E.P. Taylor’s strategy for forming a monopoly, try and obtain full control of the brewing industry.
O’Keefe Brewery 2
Its part of E.P Taylor merger to with other breweries to monopolize the industry, founded originally by Eugene O’Keeffe how had no experience in brewing, grows the brewery in the 1980s.
Moderation League 1
The moderation league had become more of an instrument of the brewers. They started poring money in to the parties to stop prohibition.
Mitch Hepburn (1896-1953) 1
He become the premier of Ontario of 1934, born on an onion farm just outside of London. He had a rebellious nature and got expelled. Started off as a clerk in a bank and joined WW1 then returns to banking. Rebuilds the liberal party, by promoting the elimination of corruption. He plans to end prohibition in Ontario and officially ends prohibition in Ontario.
Beer parlors 1
The drinking establishments on the post-prohibition Canada, you had to sit and drink and men and women were separated. Alcohol drinking was very strict.
Kidnapping of John S. Labatt 3
Kidnappings had become more frequent during the great depression. It ultimately boosts the sales of the brewery, happens on August 14, 1934. Labatt is up at his cottage, being late he takes a shortcut, a car stops in front of him and three men kidnap him. They ask for 150000 dollars as ransom. The police and press are informed. The press announces the news to all of Canada, kidnappers get scared and Labatt finds a solution to get out. This incident scarred Labatt
Black Christmas 4
Event that leads to a massive outside lobbying campaign by Canadian brewers. There are many drunk accidents on Christmas day. The temperance movement was outraged and blamed it on alcohol. The brewers went on a campaign to make people drink responsible.
