A

A man from England who became a farmer in Canada and he had English soldiers in London who had a demand for beer, so he started his brewery with his friend.

3.How did the temperance movement change during the nineteenth century?

A

It went from a beer accepting movement that wanted to stop people drinking alcohol through persuasion. Once water became safer to drink the movement formed in to the prohibitionist movement. This movement wanting the government to ban all consumption of alcohol throughout Canada.

4.What were Canadians drinking during the 19th century and why?

A

Canadians were mostly drinking beer and whiskey. This is because it was safe to drink beer at the time compared to water which was dirty and had disease in it.

5.How did John Labatt and his son grow the family business during the period 1847-1878?

A

Because of the Crimean war half of Labatt’s clientele leaves for Russia. So he decides to export his beer out of London. The great western comes to London, allowing Labatt to be able to sell to Toronto, Kingston, Ottawa etc. Also with the introduction of Indian Pale a the world fair.

John Kinder Labatt (1803-1866) 1 + 2

A

Founded the Labatt brewery one of the largest brewing companies in the world. Grew up in Ireland in a small town that is starting to industrialize. Key believer a technology and economic growth. Eventually leaves to London, bankside. Meets a woman and decides to go to upper Canada (Ontario), He gets 200 acres of free land becoming a farmer in London for 15 years. When he turned 45 he sold everything he had and goes back to London. Then realizes he wont be able to compete in London. His wife writes him that his friend started brewing. His wife then asked to buys half a brewery and now he is in the business of brewing. Later buys the other half of the brewery.

Temperance 3

A

New movement focused around drinking in moderation, to reduce drinking gradually and morally. Through persuasion and beer is seen in a favorable light. Mostly because beer was one of the safest drinks to drink. Movement made of up largely protestant women.

There are six Cholera Epidemics between 1832 and 1853 claiming 20000 lives from contaminated water. For Joseph Christmas its a sign of the end of the world.

Rebellions of 1837-1838 3

A

Happens in Lower and upper Canada, more serious in lower Canada. They were about the Elites having too much power and wanting more control over things. Chateau clique (lower Canada) and family compact (upper Canada). They were basically rigging the system allowing them to grow. the rebellions lead to about 328 deaths (325 in lower Canada). They met up and drank wanting an American style democracy, marching down young street. The British soldiers shoot above their heads and are able to stop the rebellion.

A

He speaks in preference for hard liquor drinking and comes to north America during the 1840s. He did not like the brandy loving Canadians.

A

She also spoke for the preference for hard liquor, and had a farm north of Bellville. While she was farming she was also writing the book ruffing it in the bush, in which she talks about her preference for hard liquor.

John Labatt II (1838-1915) 5

A

Fourth oldest son, He took over the Labatt brewery at 19 in 1866 - 1915. He started out with the lowest job and realizes his talents. His dad sends him out to George smith. Labatt II brings back India Pale to Canada and it becomes the Labatt’s brewery most famous drink.

It is a hoppy beer originating in south England, which was specially made for long travel to India. It became very popular in Canada,

A

Labatt wins a gold medal for his IPA, these fairs were designed for companies to use to show their products to the public.

A

the temperance movement morphs into the prohibitionist movement around and after 1850. but prohibitionists become fully against alcohol, to achieve this they wanted the state to regulate liquor out of Canada. It also states that beer is just as bad as other liquors.

John Bengough’s “Miss Canada” 3

A

Shows the shift in dry thinking and showing that beer is just as bad as the other liquors. The picture presented miss Canada representing Canada. And the devil representing the liquor companies. these two figures are both serving liquor to the downtrodden of society. Making it look like alcohol is causing moral decay and other social problems. The picture also had demonizing liquor names on the bottles of liquor.
