What is PD
A degenerative, progressive disorder
affecting nerve cells in deep parts of the brain - basal ganglia and substantia nigra
The cause of PD
Unknown combination of genetics and environmental factors
Prognostic
Males are more likely to get it
People over 60
Genetics and environment play a role
Motor symptoms
Rigidity
Limited trunk control
Lack of coordination and balance
Non-motor symptoms
Anxiety
Depression
Sleep
Functions affected
Freezing when walking
Difficulty swallowing
Lack of sleep can lead to frustration and irritability
Get tired easily
Freezing
When walking, they will freeze and notably try to continue without effort
OTA interventions
Motor - think big movements, energy conservation
Non-motor - attention and concentration, and memory games
PTA interventions
Motor - gait training, respiratory exercises
Non-motor - patient education and manual therapy
Masking (hypomimia)
Hiding your emotions like sadness or anger
Shuffling gait
Feet moving, but dragging on the floor
Festination
Short steps
Stooped posture
Bradykinesia
Slowness of movement and speed
Lower aplitude of movement
Retropulsion
Loss of balance due to leaning back
Worsening of postural stability and loss of postural reflexes
Action tremor
When the tremor occurs when the muscle is moved voluntarily (grabbing a cup)
