define culture
the learned and shared beliefs, values, and life ways of a particular group
define ethnicity
the social identity and origins of a social group due largely to language, religion and national origin (ex: french-canadian)
define ethnocentrism
the belief that your won race or ethnic group is the most important/superior
define safer space
a supportive, non-threatening environment where all participants can feel comfortable to express themselves and share their experiences without fear of discrimination
define cultural relativism
not judging a culture to our own standards of what is right or wrong, strange or normal
ex: we think eating insects is gross but some cultures do so we should ask ourselves why do some cultures eat fried insects instead of saying thats gross
define cultural blinding
the inability to understand how particular matters might be viewed by people of a different culture because of a rigid adherence to the views, attitudes, and values of one’s own culture or because the perspective of one’s own culture is sufficiently limiting to make it difficult to see alternatives.
basically Cultural blindness is characterized by health care providers who assert that race and culture make no difference in how services are provided.
define cultural compétence
skills, knowledge, attitude
implies the ability of health care workers to give the best medical care to patients while demonstrating cultural awareness for their beliefs, race, and values. It entails having knowledge of patients’ cultural diversity and treating them with this in mind.
define race
- used to classify humankind according to common ancestry
- widely reliant on differentiation by physical characteristics
- has no basis in biological reality
