when you are within your scope of practice, and when you can help. If there is a car accident, your gonna pull over but if you have other people in the car, you may not be able to wait for the 2 hours to help the whole time
what is the purpose of an emergency action plan
every clinic needs one, and it needs to be written. to facilitate and organize an employer and employee actions during workplace emergencies.
what are the components of the EAP
activation procedures, names and contact information, clinic address, location of telephones, nearest exits, ambulance access, locations of supplies and first aid kit, and plan of action in case of fire, tornado, crime, terrorism things like that
what are the 4 principle roles that need to be established
- immediate care (head of team)
- equipment retrieval
- activation and direction of EMS
- secondary care support (crowd control)
do we need to practice an EAP
yes, at least quarterly
do we need to do maintenance on equipment

what is some of the necessary equipment
EAP Ambu bag and bag valve mask resuscitation mask pulse ox BP stuff First aid supplies diabetic supplies electrolyte drinks blankets (shock)
what is part of the emergency medical response
initial assessment airway management splinting, bandaging, immobilization acute care for concussions medical triage HAZMAT childbirth environmental issues
are all PT qualified to provide sideline coverage of athletic events
Not all prequalified, some need to do residency and SCS and then it may be ethical for them to work on the sideline. you really do need some sort of advanced training to do this
what are some environmental issues to be concerned about
heat related
cold related and altitude
what are some heat related injuries and what are they
heat cramps: dehydrated and needs a stretch
heat syncope: blood pools in the extremities after an event
heat exhaustion: when your temp is under 104 degrees, and you are sweating or not, you are tired and you may lose consciousness
heat stroke: above 104 degrees
hyponatremia: emergency like heat exhaustion, must increase electrolytes and also use ice packs
are all heat related things emergencies

what are some signs and symptoms of cardiac events
pressure, tightness, pain, squeezing, aching chest, arms, neck jaw or back, and nausea, indigestion, heartburn, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, cold sweats, fatigue, lightheaded.
what must we do when we suspect a cardiac emergency
call 911, and get the AED
then get a SAMPLE
what is a SAMPLE
signs and symptoms allergies medications past medical history last oral intake events leading up to the case
with a cardiac event, can we give aspirin? how much?
yes, 325mg dose, and chew it, don’t swallow it, and call 911. but DO NOT GIVE IF MI IS NOT CLEAR
what si the rate and depth of compressions
rate: 100-120 bpm, and 2 inches deep
2 breaths to 30 compressions
what is hypoglycemia
a diabetic emergency, should keep glucose tablets, honey and stuff on hand to administer, and a sharps container. you should give sugar when suspected, it will not hurt them
what is exercise induced asthma
severe wheezing, coughing that will not stop, rapid breathing, chest tightness and pressure, can’t talk, feeling anxious and panicked, and pale sweaty face
how can we treat exercise induced asthma
keep clam, give them their inhaler, and diaphragmatic breathing, and 911
what are seizures
temporary confusion, staring spell, jerking of arms and legs, loss of consciousness or awareness, or psychic symptoms, even a blank stare
how do we treat seizures
let it run its course, and clear the area and protect their modesty. do not restrain them
what is anaphylaxis
fainting, lightheaded, low BP, dizzy and flushing, and hard to breath and rapid breathing, short breath or wheezing. Hives, swelling under the skin, blue skin from poor circulation, rashes, tachycardia, feeling of doom, itching, tongue swelling, swallowing difficulties.
