Week 7: Dietary Assessment inathletic population Flashcards
Why do we assess diet?
To check whether athlete nutrient intake is in line with guidelines
Intake can be considered alongside biochemical/anthromopetric information to determine whether intake is adequate
From part of a medical assessment to identify health problems
Educational purposes and self-awareness
For studying nutritional interventions and their effect.
What are the 2 types of assessment methodology for assessing nutritional intake
Retrospective: Examination of food taken in the past
Prospective: Monitoring ongoing food intake
What are the 2 of the most accessible prospective assessment methods?
Weighted Diet Record: Subject weighs items on a scale and records it
Estimated Diet record: Plate waste is also weighed. Subjects estimates portion sizes and records all food and drink consumed.
What may be some of the challenges of estimating portion size?
It may be difficult to accurately measure portion. Participants may alter their behaviour ex) looking at the measure from the package label, and just putting the whole portion because its easier to record.
How long would be a relatively period for recording dietary intake? What are the factors to consider once these are prolonged or shortened
3 days.
<3 days: High intra-individual variability
> 4days: Greater subject compliance required
What may be limitations faced when assessing dietary intake for athletes?
high underestimation of what the participant actually took.
Alteration of usual intake during reporting period
Inaccurate reporting to improve perception of what is consumed
Wrong quantification of nutrition details while reporting
What are some advice that are not encouraged by sport professionals without expertise in nutrition?
- Individualised, bespoke or prescriptive dietary advice
- Advice in relation to medical condition
- Dietary advice for the primary aim of influencing sport performance
