Week 3 Protein Flashcards
What does insulin do other than store fat for protein?
Protein synthesis and decrease protein breakdown
What’s the benefit of consuming amino acid posttraining
Stimulates protein synthesis rather than protein breakdown
Is timing crucial for muscle hypertrophy?
Not really, adequate intake is more important
What are the Branched Chained Amino Acids? Why is it significant?
Isoleusine, leusine, Valine. These account for 14-18% of the total amino acids in muscle proteins. They also have insulinotropic properties
What is Leucines role?
Regulates protein metabolism. 1. Promotes protein synthesis 2. Inhibits protein breakdown.
how could slow digesting proteins like casein be useful for?
Casein could be useful before sleeping when theres no activity, protein synthesis could be promoted for a prolonged period of time
What is a satellite cell?
Small number of stem cells that remain in muscle of an adult
Does timing of protein intake matter as much?
No, Anabolic effects of exogenous essential amino acids occure whether its ingested 1hr or 3hr post exercise.
No effect on protein breakdown either.
Rather than timing, adequate intake post exercise may be more important
What does studies show is the best interval and dosage to take protein post-training?
20g of whey protein over 4 intervals 12 hours post-training seemed to have a great impact on protein synthesis.
