What is an anxiety disorder
Disorders where a client shows exaggerated or excessive anxiety with physiological changes
What is anxiety
Normal reaction of alertness and an adaptive response experienced by everyone
Types of anxiety disorders (8)

What are panic attacks characteristics and symptoms
Sudden onset of intense fear, terror or apprehension and reaches a peak within 10 minutes or less
Heart palpitation, sweating, trembling, short of breath, twitching, light headed, blurred vision, hyperventilating, fear of dying
Panic disorder characteristics and symptoms
Recurrent panic attacks, followed by persistent concern about having anther panic attack
Same symptoms as panic attack, and also fear of undiagnosed disease or life threatening illness, fear of going crazy and fear of having another attack
Obsessive compulsive disorder characteristics and symptoms
Recurrent obsessions of intrusive thoughts and a person is compelled to carry out rituals or actions and causes anxiety when ignored
e.g. Need to have things in certain order, overemphasis on cleanliness and neatness, hypochondrias with repeated Drs visits
Generalised anxiety disorder characteristics and symptoms
Excessive and chronic anxiety occurring most days for 6 months
Worrying of real issues but interferes with functioning
Anticipates fear, repetitive worrying thoughts, difficulty concentrating, muscle tension, disturbed sleep, restless
Phobic disorder characteristics and symptoms
Abnormal fear and anxiety is triggered by a specific situation or object
Anticipate terrifying consequences from encounters the object/situation
Can be animal, height, space, object
Anticipate anxiety when confronted with the phobic object
Avoidance behaviours
Restricted lifestyle
Agoraphobia characteristics and symptoms
Abnormal fear of being in a place or situation where escape is difficult, strongly linked with panic attacks
Needing to be in constant view of an exit
Avoidance behaviours
Confined to heir home
Social phobia characteristics
Fear of social outings or performance situations where a person is exposed to scrutiny by others
Exposure to situations such as public speaking may bring on panic attacks
Poor social skills, avoid eye contact, shaky voice, low self esteem, negative
Adjustment disorder characteristics and symptoms
Exaggerated emotional behaviour response to a significant life change e.g. Migration, divorce, bereavement
Depressed mood, anxious, disturbance in conduct, decreased performance, change in relationship, suicide attempts, exaggerated emotional response
Acute stress disorder characteristics and symptoms
Transient response to severe trauma such as an accident or natural disaster, lasts 2 days to 4 weeks
Anxiety response to threatening situations, feeling numb, anger, recurrent thoughts of event, heart palpitations
Post traumatic stress disorder characteristics and symptoms
Development of symptoms following exposure to an extreme stress or involving direct personal experience of an event such as torture, trauma or witnessing death like in military combat
Flashbacks, experiencing the events, nightmares, sleep disturbance, denial of feelings
Somatoform disorders
Physical symptoms and complaints suggesting presence of a medical condition
Symptoms cause significant distress and interfere with social, occupational and other functioning
Dysmorphic disorder
Imagined specific defects
Starts in adolescence
Accompanied by depressive disorder
Causes distress and social and occupational functioning
