Define mood
Subjective and internal emotional feelings of a person
What are mood disorders
Characterised by disturbance in mood such as depressed or elevated moods
Define affect
Objective and external emotional expressions of a person
Co morbidity of mood disorders
Mood disorders usually occur with other disorders such as anxiety and substance abuse
Types of mood disorders (2)
Unipolar -major depressive disorder -dysthymic disorder -other depressive disorders Bipolar -bipolar 1 -bipolar 2 -cyclothymic disorder
Depression
Mood disorder characterised by depressed mood, permission, anhedonia and apathy
Major depressive disorders
- MDD with single episode: one major episode of depression
- MDD with recurrent episodes: 2 major episodes of depression, separated by at least a 2 month period with normal functioning
Absence of mania
Diagnostic criteria of major depressive disorders
A. 5 or more of the following for 2 weeks
Depressed mood, diminished pleasure, weight loss or gain, insomnia, psychomotor retardation, fatigue, feeling worthless, inappropriate guilt, difficulty concentrating, recurrent thoughts of death
B. Symptoms must cause significant distress
C. Exclusions of substance, medical and bereavement
Dysthymic disorder
Less severe but chronic condition characterised by depressive symptoms that occur most days for at least 2 years
Diagnostic criteria of dysthymic disorders
A. Depressed/ irritable mood B. Presence of 2 of the following: Appetite disturbance, sleep disturbance, low energy, poor concentration, difficulty making decisions, feeling hopeless C. Present for 2 years D. No evidence of major depressive episode during first 2 years E. No manic or hypomanic disorder F. No chronic psychotic disorder G. Not related to organic disorders
What is bipolar disorder
Affective disorder characterised by episodes of mania and depression
Bipolar 1 defined by…..
Alternation of one or more mania and major depressive epidoses
Average onset: 18years
Tends to be chronic
High risk of suicide
Bipolar 2 defined by..
Alternation of one or more major depression and hypomanic episodes
Average onset: 22 years
Mania disorder is..
Characterised by elevation of mood, rapid thought, rapid speech, extreme over activity and irresponsible behaviour
(Hypomania is same characteristics but less severe)
Diagnostic criteria of mania disorder
A. Distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive or irritable mood
B. Mood disturbance, plus 3 of the following
Grandiosity, increased sex drive, decreased need for sleep, more talkative than normal, flight of ideas, distracted easily, extravagant with money, excessive involvement in pleasurable activity, over-optimistic
C. Marked impairment
D. No psychosis
E. No organic disorders
