Week 7 Flashcards
Altered states of consciousness
Describe the core characteristics of the hypnotic state
Body ‘feels’ asleep but mind active.
Patient is more open to suggestions.
What are the factors that make someone more susceptible to hypnosis
Imaginative people (able to form vivid images).
Children.
Victims of trauma.
Describe role theory for hypnosis
Relies on a patient’s expectation of their ‘role’ as a hypnotised person.
Describe dissociation theory for hypnosis
Consciousness split into some control by patient and some control by hypnotist.
How do psychoactive substances affect the brain to alter consciousness
by altering interactions between neurotransmitters and receptors.
What is an agonist in a psychoactive substance
Similar to neurotransmitter so bind in its place and mimic the same effects.
What is an antagonist in a psychoactive substance
similar to neurotransmitters so bind in its place but doesn’t mimic it’s effects.
How do expectations affect drug experience
People pre-conceived expectations guide their reactions to drugs.
Describe the depressants class of psychoactive substances and what drugs are included
slow neural transmissions (alcohol, opiates).
Describe the stimulants class of psychoactive substances and what drugs are included
speeds up neural transmission (amphetamines, cocaine, caffeine, nicotine, ecstasy).
Describe the hallucinogens class of psychoactive substances and what drugs are included
cause hallucinations (LSD, marijuana)
