what is an airway obstruction
blockage in airway usually above vocal chords
- can be partial or complete

what are risk factors to airway obstruction?
- difficulty swallowing (eg stroke victim)
- kids putting shti in their mouth
- drugs or alcohol
- eating
- airway oedema and inflammation
- Infection
- Altered conscious state
What are the 3 stages of swallowing
Oral stage

Oesophageal stage

What are some upper airway obstructions?
Epiglottitis
Laryngotracheobronchitis

What are some lower airway obstructions?
Asthma

16 x the resistance
What are signs of Nasal foreign bodies?
Extremely bad odour
Unilateral rhinorrhea
Epistaxis
Sinusitis
What are symptoms of impending respiratory failure?
- increase wob
- tachypnea/cardia
- nasal flaring
- drooling
- grunting
- wheezing
- stridor
- head bobbing
- accessory muslces
- cyanosis despite o2
- inability to lie down
- diaphoresis
- altered conscious state
What are the signs and symptoms of resp distress?
cyanosis tachypnoea wheeze crepitation trachael shift tachycardia (may be brady in neonate) abnormal breathing pallor grunting
what is the aim of back blows and chest thrusts in choking?
simulate a cough artificially
can you do back blows on newborns?
No - contraindicated
how do you position an infant for back blows?
position infant prone with head dependent across arm
support jaw without compressing potential obstruction
