Week 7 Flashcards
Osmotic Pressure
Measure of a solution’s tendency to take in water by osmosis
Osmolarity
Amount of osmotically active moles of solute per liter of solution
Tonicity
Measure of a solution’s ability to change the volume of a cell by osmosis. (Hyper, Hypo, Iso)
Osmoconformers
Organisms in osmotic equilibrium in their environment. Other vertebrates are osmoregulators.
Protonephridia
Flatworms use as osmoregulatory organs. Open to outside, but not inside.
Nephridia
Earthworms use to osmoregulate. Open inside and outside.
Malpighian Tubules
Insect osmoregulatory organs.
Vertebrate Kidneys
Vertebrate osmoregulatory organs.
Kidney Basic Functions
Filtration, Reabsorption, and Secretion
Proximal Convoluted Tubule
Reabsorbs virtually all nutrient molecules in the filtrate and 2/3rds of the NaCl and water.
Loop of Henle
Creates gradient of increasing osmolarity from cortex to medulla. Transport Na and Cl into ascending loop. Two limbs of the loop form a countercurrent multiplier system.
