week 6 networking Flashcards
what is network
A group of systems connected together, sharing information.
what does there three network stands for?
LAN
MAN
WAN
Local area network
metro area network
wide area network
IQ:What is the difference between a WAN and the internet?
WAN : A group of LANs of a specific company connected together, spanning a wide geographical area.
Internet: A group of LANs connected togethers spanning the globe.
Describe these Categories of Networks.
1) p2p
2) client -server NEtwork
P2P Network: Peer-to-Peer Network is a group of systems connected together, sharing information without a central server involved.
Client-Server Network
A group of systems connected together, sharing information from a central server.
IQ: How to display the public IP address of your router?
www.whatismyip.com or www.ipchicken.com
Describe a Default Gateway?
opens the LAN to the internet. A Router is a DG (ONLY) when it opens the LAN to the internet.
what does a DHCP Broadcast do?
requests network information. The Public IP of the DG/Router enables internet systems to talk in the LAN
what is a DNS
(Domain Name Server, System, Service)
Translates/resolves hostnames to IP address
Maps hostname to IP address
SCENARIO: If the Default Gateway goes down, the customer may not be able to get on the internet. Respond.
Troubleshooting Techniques:
Determine if anyone else is experiencing issues connecting to the internet.
IF NOT, rule out DG
If no one can connect, then there is a network problem.
If DHCP is down no one will receive an IP address. (Software/Hardware Issues - cause)
IQ: How does DNS get an A record?
When local systems register themselves with a DNS Server after receiving network configuration settings from the DHCP.
Network Configuration Settings
IP Address, DNS Address, Default Gateway Address
what does FQDN stands for?
Fully Qualified Domain Name = Hostname + Domain Name of a system
identify these Domains
local domain
public domain
Local Domain - a group of systems connected together, sharing information controlled by a central server, known as a domain controller. Domain controller is managed by a domain admin.
Public Domain - created by a domain hosting company and used to host websites & web applications.
define Workgroup
a group of systems in a P2P network.
Only systems in a specific work group can share resources.
DHCP: Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
Assigns network configuration settings/info to a networked system
Leases out dynamic IP addresses to a networked system
IQ:
identify what a DHCP SCOPE is
the range of IP addresses that can be assigned to a networked system by DHCP.
what is the function of the ipv4/ipv6
hostname to IP mapping in the forward name resolution
PTR(pointer)
used for DNS reversed name resolution. ex. IP Hostname resolution.
CNAME (canonical)
creates hostname aliases in the DNS forward lookup zone.
MX
used to identify a microsoft exchange email server in the LAN
what is a hostname
is a label assigned to a system by an admin
identify what a IP address is
it is a unique number assigned to a network system ; in order to allow systems to communicate with other system in the LAN
what is a static IP
a permanent IP address that’s assign to by admin
