A
belief in legitimacy on the part of the relevant social agents and power relations as legitimate where those involved in them, subordinate as well as dominant, believe them to be so.

Three components of legitimacy
A
- Legal validity; the rules of authority must be seen as legally valid
- Justifiability; The rules or actions of the authority must be justified in terms that citizens can accept as valid, consistent with shared beliefs, and morally acceptable.
- Consent; There must be a general consent or acceptance of the authority’s rule by the public, often demonstrated through participation or compliance
