Week 6 - Innate immunity Flashcards
What are the innate immune response key features
Immune response active by infection
Normal conditions it’s turned off
Damage to self tissue must be minimised
What are the primary lymphoid organs
Bone marrow and thymus they are the sites where b and T cells are produced
What are secondary lymphoid organs job
They are the site where the pathogen is encountered. These filter or identify foreign targets
Where do immune cells come from
They’re derived from red bone marrow in a process called haemoatpoiesis
The adaptive immune response is…
Specific, and develops over time
The innate immune response is…
Non-specific, rapid, and present at birth
Lymphocytes are components of the…
Humoral and cell-mediated adaptive immune response
Mechanical factors are components of..
Barriers formed by the innate immune response
Mechanical factors
Physical barriers
Chemical barriers
Host physiology
Cellular factors
Phagocytic cells
Antigen-presenting cells
Solvable factors
Pyrogens
Enzymes
Chemotaxis
Term used to describe the recruitment/movement of cells towards a chemical stimulus
Phagocytosis
The intracellular process used by phagocytic cells to digest pathogens and cellular debris. It’s is triggered by pathogen recognition. Including monocytes and neutrophils. It is effective for targeting extra cellular pathogens such as bacteria, Protozoa and fungi.
How are intracellular pathogens targeted
By natural killer cells and interferon
Activation of complement results in
Inflammation
Opsonisation
Phagocytosis
Cell lysis
