Week 6: Behaviour Modification Flashcards
What is behaviour modification?
The systematic application of the learning principles of operant conditioning, classical conditioning or observational learning to individuals or groups to eliminate undesirable behaviour or encourage desirable behaviour.
What is the method of changing behaviour in behaviour modification?
A systematic program based on the principles of learning, with most behaviour modification programs using the principles of operant conditioning.
Where are behaviour modification programs commonly used?
In institutions such as schools, hospitals, and prisons, where the consequences of behaviour are more strictly controlled.
What are token economies?
Behavioural techniques used to encourage desirable behaviours by reinforcing them with tokens that can be exchanged later for desired objects, activities or privileges.
Some research indicates that it may be unwise to reward students for participating in learning activities they already enjoy because when the reinforcer is withdrawn, that interest may disappear.
What is behaviour therapy?
An application of behaviour modification in the treatment of psychological problems ranging from phobias to addictive behaviours.
