Week 5: Classical Conditioning Flashcards
What is Classical Conditioning?
A process through which a response previously made only to a specific stimulus is made to another stimulus that has been paired repeatedly with the original stimulus.
What are the effects of Classical Conditioning?
It is a simple form of learning yet has powerful effects on our attitudes, likes/dislikes, and emotional responses.
What is a stimulus?
Any event or object in the environment to which an organism responds.
What is associative learning?
When we associate one thing with another, resulting in a positive or negative attitude with a name, gesture, style, manner of speaking, etc.
How does Classical Conditioning influence our lives?
Our lives are profoundly influenced by the associations we learn through classical conditioning.
Who is Ivan Pavlov?
A researcher who organized and directed research in physiology at the Institute of Experimental Medicine in St. Petersburg, Russia.
What did Ivan Pavlov win a Nobel Prize for?
His classic experiments on the physiology of digestion.
What is Pavlov known for?
His study of the conditioned reflex in dogs.
What question did Pavlov study regarding involuntary responses?
How could an involuntary response such as salivation come to be associated with the sights and sounds accompanying the act of feeding?
What observation did Pavlov make about dogs and salivation?
Dogs began to salivate before the food was presented, when they heard the researchers’ footsteps or their dishes.
