What is osteoarthritis?
A
Chronic condition characterised by deterioration of the cartilage in the joint.

What is rheumatoid arthritis?
A
Systemic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation around the body and commonly presents with pain in the joints.

Treatment & Management of Arthritis
A
- self-management (e.g. diet and exercise)
- education and support on living with the condition
- physiotherapy
- medication (for pain and inflammation.
- referral to specialist care where necessary.

Medications for arthritis
A
NSAID’s, corticosteroids and DMARD’s.

Features or RA
A
- autoimmune disease
- occurs between ages of 30-60 years.
- symmetrical involvement of multiple joints.

Features of OA
A
- degenerative joint disease
- affects older adults, commonly after age 50.
-typically affects weight-bearing joints, often unilateral.

Physiological symptoms of acute pain
A
- increases HR, RR, and BP.

Physiological symptoms of chronic pain
A
- difficulty sleeping
- difficulty completing ADL’s
- stiffness and loss of flexibility/movement.
