Week 6 Flashcards
What are episodic memories?
Events and emotional valence.
What are semantic memories?
Knowledge, meaning of things.
What is schemata?
Patterns of expectations e.g. restaurant script.
What does Ajzen’s theory of planned behaviour describe?
- predict work-related behaviours as a function of attitudes towards that behaviour, subjective norms and percieved control.
Hackman and Oldham’s Job Characteristics Model
- predict job satisfaction as a function of certain important features of jobs.
5 features of jobs affect job satisfaction?
- Task Variety
- Task Identity
- Task Significance
- Autonomy
- Feedback
Demand’s-Control Model
- predict job strain as a function of job demands and workers ability to exert control.
Evidence of the demands-control model
- restaurant workers experienced the severest strain symptoms when they faced heavy customer demands which were not able to exert control.
What is an example of ‘attitudes’ in TPB - work example.
- my work is important to people.
- I get self-respect from doing my job.
What are some examples of ‘subjective norms’ in TPB - work example.
- everyone should be employed.
- my boss will check on me.
What are some examples of ‘perceived control’ in TPB - work example.
- I am good at what I am doing.
- Customers are pleased.
What are some examples of ‘behaviour’ in TPB - work example.
- work hard
- take less days off
- try to help customers
What is task/skill variety?
Using lots of different skills, performing different tasks.
What is task identity?
Preforming a task to completion and seeing the results.
What is task significance?
Performing meaningful tasks (tasks that have an impact).
What is autonomy?
Having control over one’s work.
What is feedback?
Feeling supported in one’s work.
What does ‘strain’ mean in Karaseks job-demands model?
- psychological strain results from the joint effects of the demands of a work situation and the range of decision-making freedom available to the worker facing those demands.
What are the two aspects of the job situation represent?
- the instigators of action (work load demands, conflict or other stressors which put the individual in motivated or energised state of “stress”).
- the constraints on the alternative resulting actions.
What is decision latitude?
Control over our work.
What is the TPB test?
Test whether attitudes relate to intention to quit.
What does the JCM test?
Test whether task variety relates to job satisfaction.
What does the JD-C test?
Test whether high demands relate to mental strain.
What are the three main models?
Theory of Planned Behaviour
Job Characteristics Model
Job-Demand Characteristics
