Week 5: Vocab Flashcards
Antibiotic
A drug used to kill a pathogen
Mutaulism
An ecological interaction in which both species benefits
Epidemic
A spread of a disease over a larger area and number of people than expected
Transduction
The transfer of bacterial DNA from one bacterium to another by a virus
Vaccination
The administration of material to provoke the development of immunity to a specific pathogen
Antibody
A molecule that binds specifically to an antigen and kills pathogens
Conjucation
Two bacterial cells physically join together and transfer DNA from one cell to another
Pathogen
A disease causing organism
Ex. a bacteria, fungus or worm that invades the body and does damage
Transformation
DNA released into the environment by bacteria is physically absorbed by other bacteria
Virluence
A measure of a pathogen’s ability to cause damage or death
Commensalism
An ecological interaction in which one species benefits and the other is neither helped nor harmed
Ecology
The study of the interactions among species and their physical environments
Resistance
The ability of an organism to survive exposure to a drug that previously had been able to kill or disable it
Transmission
The passage of a pathogen from one host to another
