Week 5 (limbic system) Flashcards
Basal Ganglia
Deep nuclei that coordinate all cortical activity into one behavioral output
Explicit memory
“declarative memory”, recall of factual information: episodic (personal facts) and semantic (general facts); occurs in the hippocampus
Implicit memory
“Procedural memory”, recall of how to do things: learned gradually over repeated experiences; occurs in the basal ganglia
Limbic system
Involved in human emotion regulation by providing affective tone and interpreting affect
Motor Loop
Takes in sensory input, consolidates and decides correct motor output
Cognitive/Associative Loop
Helps with learning and cognition through higher cortical functions and motor learning
Limbic system
Involved in human emotion regulation by providing affective tone and interpreting affect; located in the center of the brain in the subcortical region
Role of amygdala
Regulates mood and emotional responses; receives input from neutral sensory stimuli (associative learning takes place if reinforcer is present)
Orbital medial prefrontal cortex and emotional learning
Involved in emotional learning through ongoing analysis and modification of behavior when reinforcement contingencies are rapidly changing
