What is the truth and reconciliation commission of canada? What did they aim to do?

- Brought by survivors of the residential school system
- Commission aimed to raise awareness of the history of residential schools
- Commission visited communities around the world and interviewed thousands of survivors
What is settler colonialism?
forced removal of indigenous people from their land
ongoing process in modern time
What is cultural genocide?
prevention of cultural values and identity from one generation to the next
ex. residential schools

- restrictions from leaving the reserve without permission
- prevented students from speaking their own language

grief becomes disenfranchised when there is failure to recognize that a loss has occurred
- dehumanizing
What is ambiguous loss?
Losses that cannot be properly mourned, lack of closure / understanding
