Week 5 - Infections Of Surfaces Flashcards
What are the normal viruses present on the skin?
Papilloma
Herpes simplex
What are the normal gram positive bacteria on the skin?
Steph aureus (produces coagulase enzyme)
Coagulase negative staphylococci
Corynebacterium
What are the normal gram negative bacteria found on the skin?
Enterobacteriaceae
What are the normal fugi and parasites found on the skin?
Yeasts
dermatophytes
Mites
How do people get infections from themselves?
Micro-organisms carried on skin and mucosal surfaces, normally harmless or even beneficial (some bacteria synthesise vitamins), but if they transfer to other sites of the body they can become harmful
Give an example of an infection due to invasion?
Strep pyogenes pharyngitis
Give an example of infection due to migration?
E coli urinary tract infection
Give an example of infection due to inoculation?
Coagulase negative staphylococcus prosthetic joint infection
Give an example of infection due to haematogenous (travel to point of infection via blood stream)?
Viridans strep endocarditis
What things can prosthetic surface infections occur on?
Intravascular lines Peritoneal dialysis catheters Prosthetic joints Cardiac valves Pacing wires Endovascular grafts
What is prosthetic valve endocarditis?
Bacteria colonise the prosthetic valves as they stick to them better as they are a different material
If happens >1 year post op then its caused by viridans streptococci, enterococcus faecalis, staph aureus or candida
If happens <1 year post op then caused by coagulase negative staphylococci
What can cause prosthetic joint infections?
Coagulase negative staphylococci
Staph aureus
What can cause cardiac pacing wire endocarditis?
Coagulase negative staphylococci
Staph aureus
