What is a purpuric rash?
Non-blanching rash
What is sepsis?
Life threatening organ dysfunction due to dysregulated host response to infection
What is septic shock?
Persisting hypotension requiring treatment to maintain blood pressure despite fluid resuscitation
What is bacteraemia?
Presence of bacteria in the blood
What is the sepsis 6 bundle?
Oxygen, blood cultures, IV antibiotics, fluid challenge, lactate, measure urine output
What urgent investigations must be done if you suspect someone is septic?
Full blood count, urea and electrolytes, EDTA bottle for PCR, blood sugar, liver function tests, C-Reactive protein, coagulation studies, blood gases
What is the bacterial pathogen causing meningococcal menigitis?
Neisseria meningitidis
How is neisseria meningitidis spread?
Direct contact with respiratory secretions
