Week 1 - Introduction To Microbes Flashcards
Are viruses and bacteria DNA, RNA or both?
Viruses can be either RNA or DNA
Bacteria are only DNA
What is a plasmid?
DNA thats transferable between bacteria
Often contains antibiotic resistance genes
Describe the shape of a cocci bacteria
Round
Describe the shape of a spirillus bacteria
Long, thin, wiggly
Describe the shape of a bacillus bacteria
Rectangle - rod shaped
What is a cluster of cocci called?
Staphylococci
What is a chain of cocci called?
Strephtococci
What is the difference between the cell walls of gram postive and gam negative bacteria?
Gram positive - has peptidoglycan layer on the outside
Gram negative - has an outer membrane surrounding the peptidoglycan layer which is made from lipopolysaccharides and proteins
What is the difference between an aerobe and an obligate aerobe?
Aerobe - can survive in the presence of oxygen
Obligate aerobe - requires oxygen to survive
Whats the difference between an anaerobe and an obligate anaerobe?
Anaerobe - can survive in the absence of oxygen
Obligate anaerobe - requires an oxygen free environment to survive (unless has the ability to form spores)
What is a single celled fungus called?
Yeast
What is a multicellular fungus called?
Mould
What is a single called parasite called?
Protozoa
What is a multicellular parasite called?
Helminths (also includes worms)
