How do you tell the gender of a 3rd declension noun?
First see if the Natural Gender Rule (NGR) applies. If not, look at the nominative singular ending:
-SOX = feminine
-ERrOR = masculine
-LANCET = neuter
How do you know if a 3rd declension noun is declined like lēx or like pars?
All 3rd decl masculine and feminine nouns are declined like lēx except
-nouns that have the same number of syllables in the singular nominative and genitive (ex: hostis, hostis)
-nouns whose stem ends in two consonants (ex: gens, gentis - stem is gent)
What is the main difference in nouns declined like lēx or pars?
In nouns declined like pars, the plural genitive ending is ium instead of um.
