Week 5 Clinical Anatomy of the Upper Limb - some key points Flashcards
nerve for trapezius?
accessory - CN11
nerve(s) for subscapularis?
(upper and lower) subscapular nerves
what does the axillary nerve supply?
deltoid
and
teres minor
where does the biceps brachii insert?
what is the nerve supply?
inserts into the radial tuberosity ( ie. it travels across the elbow to insert into the radius)
musculocutaneous nerve supplies all the anterior arm muscle
- biceps brachii
- coracobrachialis
- brachialis
there are 3 ligaments at the elbow: medial, lateral and annular. what does the annular ligament do?
it wraps around the radial head
what does tennis elbow affect?
the extensor muscles!!
they insert into the lateral epicondyle
ie lateral epicondylitis
what does the golf elbow effect? other name?
the flexor muscles!!
this is medial epicondylitis
what innervates the 7 interossei muscles of the hand?
the ulnar nerve
describe the 2 types of interossei muscles and their function
DAb and PAd
dorsal abductors x 4
palmar adductors x 3
what is the name for the 4 muscles that link the flexor and extensor muscles ( in the hands)
what is their nerve supply?
the lumbrical muscles
lateral (2nd and 3rd) - median nerve
medial (4 and 5) - ulnar nerve
what is inside the carpal tunnel?
4 x FDP tendons
4 x FDS tendons
1 x FPL tendon - pollicis longus
median nerve
what supplies the flexor digitorum profundus muscles of the digits?
what supplies the flexor digitorum superficialis muscles?
median nerve for lateral 2rd, 3rd
ulnar nerve for medial 4th,5th for FDP!!!
FOR FDS = ALL MEDIAN NERVE
what supplies the lumbrical muscles of the hand?
median nerve for lateral 2rd, 3rd
ulnar nerve for medial 4th,5th
what biceps head is more important - short or long?
The short head
3 origins of the deltoid
1 insertion
clavicle, acromion, spine of scapula
deltoid tuberosity of the medial humerous
2 origins of biceps brachii
1 insertion
labrum/glenoid of joint.. and coracoid process of scapula
inserts in the radial tuberosity (ie. travels right down to past the elbow to the radius)
what is a SLAP tear?
tear of the top of the long head of the biceps brachii
may also tear at the bottom – big bulging bulge
there are 3 “pollicis” muscles in the thenar region of the hand. what are they called, what action do they allow and what nerve supplies??
all median nerve thank the lord easy peasy
- Opponens pollicis - touch thumb to pinky (most lateral)
- Abductor pollicis brevis - abduct away from hand
- Flexor pollicis brevis - flex (bend) thumb
what is the important muscle in the hypothenar region?
and what supplies it?
abductor digiti minimi
ulnar nerve supply
name the 4 rotator cuff muscles
teres minor
suprascapularis
subscapularis
infrascapularis
what nerve supplies the posterior arm (and what is the 1 muscle) ?
nerve = Radial nerve muscle = triceps brachii
nerve supply
- suprascapular nerve for suprascapularis + infrascapularis
- subscapular nerve for subscapularis
- What nerve for teres minor?
teres minor = axillary nerve
There are 4 muscles in the superficial layer of the anterior forearm. what are they?
- pronator teres
- flexor carpi radialis
- palmaris longus
- flexor carpi ulnaris
what 1 muscle makes up the intermediate layer of the anterior forearm?
flexor digitorum superficialis.
what 3 muscles make up the deep layer of the anterior forearm?
- flexor pollicis longus
- flexor digitorum profundus
- pronator quadratus
“median nerve for lateral 2rd, 3rd
ulnar nerve for medial 4th,5th”
what 2 sets of muscles is this true for?
Flexor digitorum profundus of the digits
lumbrical muscles of the digtits
