Week 5 Blood Pressure Flashcards
Blood Pressure
Is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps it around the body.
- Controlled by the cardiac output and peripheral vascular reisistance
What are the factors on blood Pressure
- Pumping action of the heart
- Peripheral vascular resistance
- Blood volume
- Blood viscosity
- Venous Return
What is it measure in Blood Pressure
- measured in millimetres of mercury mmHG
Blood Pressure of a New born
40 (mean)
Blood Pressure of a 1 year old
85/54
Blood Pressure of a 6 year old
95/65
Blood Pressure of 14-17 year old
120/75
Blood Pressure of a middle adult
<120/80
What is cardiac output
- how much volume of blood per min pumped
- heart rate and stroke volume
- increase in any of these increases the blood pressure
Systolic blood pressure
- Maximum pressure of the blood against the wall of the artery
- Occurs during ventricular contraction
Diastolic blood pressure
- The minimum pressure of blood against the wall of the artery
- Occurs during ventricular relaxation
Normal pressure range systolic and diastolic ranges
Systolic : 90-120mmHg
Diastolic: 60-80mmHg
Normal blood pressure and arterial pressure range
Blood Pressure: 120/80mmHg
Aterial Pressure: 70-100mmHg
Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP)
- Average pressure throughout 1 cardiac cycle: systole and diatom
- 2/3 diastolic pressure + 1/3 systolic pressure
- Indication of overall perfusion of the body
Perfusion
- Refers to the process of delivering blood to the body’s tissues and organs.
- Requires enough blood volume and heart and vessels
Compensation Mechanism
- decreased blood volume = decreased stroke volume and decreased cardiac output
- increase the heart heart tachycardia and tachypnoea + vasoconstriction
Things that influence blood pressure
- Obesity
- Exercise
- Stress/Anxiety/Fear
- Diabetes
