Week 5 Flashcards
What % of the US population has moderate to severe pain?
25%
What is acute pain from?
tissue damage and carried by pain nerves
What is chronic pain?
at least 3 months in duration and can be related to either cancerous or non-cancerous causes.
What is nociceptive pain?
pain from stimulation of nociceptors (nerves that transmit pain signals)
What is neuropathic pain?
pain that results from a lesion, damage or dysfunction in the sensory system. Nerve pain.
What carries nociceptive pain and where does it travel to?
special pain nerves carry it to the spinal chord, thalamus, limbic and cortical areas of the brain
When evaluating pain, what should you also assess for?
SUD’s and MH issues.
SNRI’s, TCA’s and gabapentin can be used for what type of pain?
nerve pain (neuropathic)
What type of pain are opioids useful for?
Acute
What are you at risk for when using Methadone?
overdoses
What is the primary reward pathway for addiction?
VTA, Nucleus Accumbens, prefrontal cortex
What parts of the brain involve physiological dependence?
Thalamus & Brainstem
What is hyperalgesia?
An increased sensitivity to feeling pain
What is the risk of using opioids for chronic, non malignant cancer pain?
physiologic dependence, addiction and hyperalgesia
