Lyric Poetry
A brief subjective poem strongly marked by imagination, melody, and emotion and creating a single unified effect. Has numerous sub-classifications
Aubade
A lyric poem about dawn or a morning serenade.
Ballad
A fairly short narrative poem written in a song-like stanza form
Complaint
A lyric poem in which the poet; (a) laments the unresponsiveness of his mistress (b) bemoans his unhappy lot and seeks to remedy it; or (c) regrets the sorry state of the world
Dirge
A wailing song sung at a funeral or in commemoration of death; a short lyric lamentation
Elegy
A sustained formal poem setting forth meditations on death or another solemn theme
Ode
A single, unified strain of exalted lyrical verse, directed to a single purpose and dealing with one theme
Paean
A song of praise or triumph
