Week 5 Flashcards
What design stages can be informed by sustainability?
All of them
problem
study and clarify the problem
generate potential solutions
identify most promising solution
develop and test solution
implement solution
What is centralized water treatment?
A small number of plants produce drinking water that is then distributed to everywhere else
Same thing for waste water
What are the advantages of centralized systems?
Easier to maintain
Easier to monitor
cost of water treated (by volume) is smaller
What are the disadvantages of centralized systems?
The cost to set it up is huge (massive pipe system)
Very difficult to maintain as well
difficult to adjust the capacity of these systems
What are semi-decentralized water treatments?
There are a lot of smaller water treatment plants, but in each region, water is still being treated centralized, just at a smaller scale
What are fully decentralized systems?
Systems to treat water at each house, building, etc.
Point of entry system: water treatment at each building
point of use system: water treatment at each household / family
what would centralized and decentralized systems refer to in module 6?
Centralized: shipping water by boat
decentralized: drawing water from lake, well, or even rain water collection systems
