what are public policies?
they are decisions made by governments to address problems. it is a conscious choice that leads to deliberate action.
what is a healthy public policy?
public policies that improves population health. it is taken by the government to address problems. it helps make health choices the easier choice and eliminates barriers to SDOH.
why are healthy public policies important?
it is the most important and effective strategy to act on SDOH
who is involved in making public policies?
all 3 levels of government, public at large, communities/neighborhoods, health professionals, healthcare agencies, the media
what is the disadvantage of making healthy public policies?
governments decide whether or not to address certain problems. decisions of what is considered worthy of action are based on values of people within current government party.
what is population health?
an approach that aims to improve health of the entire population and reduce health inequities.
what is public policy influenced by?
neoliberalism
what is neoliberalism?
approach to economics where control of economic factors are shifted from public to private sector. it minimized governmental interventions and the amount of support/social programs. it contributes to insecure employment, low wages, increased gap between rich and poor
what is the poverty trap?
self-reinforcing mechanisms that continue the cycle of poverty. they are policies/structures that disempower people and cause them to not be healthy
how do we make policies?
learn about public policies and it’s effects on health, use knowledge about healthy public policies, identify potential collaborators (gather support), influence development of policy
what is hegemony?
it is the control or domination by one person/organization. it’s the predominant influence
what is counter hegemony?
actions of challenging existing structures to achieve/improve reality
