what is an SDOH
the primary factors that shape health
how do we tackle SDOH?
improve living conditions, tackle unequal distribution of money and resources, understand the problem and assess impact of action
why is income an important factor to health?
it is important because it determines the quality of other SDOH. low income exposes people to material and social deprivation.
what are some ways to fix income distribution?
increasing the minimum wage, progressive taxation, unionized workplaces
why is education an important SDOH?
it leads to better health. it increases overall literacy and understanding of how we can improve our own health.
A better education leads to a better job, which leads to better health
how does job security impact health?
includes intense work with non-standard hours, leading to high rates of stress, injury, and bodily pains
how does childhood development affect adult health?
creates the foundation for health in the future as it is the critical stage of physical and emotional development
how does housing impact health?
good housing = better health.
ex. whether there’s mold or adequate heating/cooling
how does geography impact health?
it affects the air we breathe, the food we eat, the viruses we are exposed to and the health services that are accessible
what is health literacy?
it is the ability to access, understand, and communication information to promote, maintain, and improve health.
what are the 3 reasons why certain people are healthier?
genetics, SDOH, healthcare system
