what is truth work?
it is being accountable and facing racism head on. it is learning and talking about racism
what is white privilege?
the advantages you immediately have in life because of being white
what is white fragility?
white people’s responsibility to learn about the history of POC and the experiences they went through in order to accommodate to their needs
how do you validate someone’s feelings?
investigating/listening feeling of the person, confirming feeling, acknowledging feeling with empathy, taking responsibility, ask what you can do
what are the stages of dealing with feelings according to the polyvagal theory?
dorsal vagal (worst, cannot cope, freed), sympathetic (fight or flight), ventral vagal (calm, oriented)
what is tone policing?
it is an oppression tactic. it detracts from the truth by attacking the tone in which the info is presented rather than the info itself.
what is white silence?
it is staying silent in instances of racism. it arises from white fragility and contributes to racism
what is white superiority?
it is the belief that white people are the superior race and thus should dominate other races
what is white exceptionalism?
it is being more worried about being called racist rather than whether or not actions are actually racist/harmful
what is race?
a socially constructed category used to classify humankind according to common ancestry. it relies on differentiation by physical characteristics.
what are the three forms of racism?
institutionalize racism, personally-mediated, internalized
what is systemic racism and what is the result of it?
it is racism embedded in institutions that place POC at a disadvantage. it leads to avoidable and inequalities between groups. results in imbalance of power and resources.
what is personally-mediated racism?
ex. micro aggressions. it is prejudice and discrimination. it directs hostile, derogatory, negative messages to targeted persons based on race. can be intentional or unintentional.
what is internalized racism?
when victims believe in the stereotypes surrounding their minority groups
what is in group vs. out group? what causes people to view others as out-group?
it is how we view certain people (in group is positively and out group is negatively). the amygdala is triggered when you see someone as out-group and causes less empathy towards that person
