What is intellectual capital?
The collective brain power or shared knowledge of a workforce that can be used to create value.
What is a knowledge worker?
Someone whose mind is an important asset to employers and who adds to the intellectual capital of the organisation.
What is an organisation?
A collection of people working together to achieve a common purpose.
What is performance effectiveness?
A measure of task output or goal accomplishment e.g. meeting a daily production target in terms of quantity
What is performance efficiency?
A measure of the resource cost associated with goal accomplishment. E.g. cost of labour
What is total quality management (TQM)?
Managing with an organisation-wide commitment to continuous improvement and meeting customer needs completely.
What are top managers?
e.g. CEOs, managing directors and directors.
Responsible for the performance of an organisation as a whole or for one of its larger parts. they pay special attention to the external environment, are alert to potential long-term problems and opportunities and develop appropriate ways of dealing with them.
They scan the environment, create and communicate long-term vision, and ensure that strategies and performance objectives are consistent with the organisation’s purpose and mission.
What are middle managers?
In charge of relatively large departments or divisions consisting of several smaller work units.
Work with top managers and coordinate with peers to develop and implement action plans consistent with organisational objectives.
What are project managers?
People who coordinate complex projects with task deadlines while working with many people of different expertise, both within and outside the organisation.
What are team leaders/supervisors?
People in charge of small work groups composed on non-managerial workers.
What are line managers?
Responsible for work activities that make a direct contribution to the organisation’s outputs.
e.g. Local department store - general manager, retail manager, department supervisors. Their jobs are directly related to the sales operations of the store.
What are staff managers?
Use special technical expertise to advice and support the efforts of line workers. e.g. The director of human resources and the CFO
What are functional managers?
Have responsibility for a single area of activity, such as finance, marketing, etc.
What are general managers?
Responsible for more complex units that include many functional areas. e.g. a plant manager who oversees many seperate functions including purchasing, manufacturing, etc.
What are administrators?
Managers working in public or not-for-profit organisations e.g. hospital administrator, public administrator, etc
