Week 4 - Transformations Flashcards
What is transformation?
The process of changing an original figure or object but not it’s structure
What are the five main types of transformations?
Translation
Reflection
Dilation
Rotation
Reduction
Teaching transformations
Hands on and visual exploration
Discussing relationships between shapes and objects
Activities for transformations
Sort and classify Build figures Creating Tessellations Building scale models Drawing maps
Hoffer skills!
What are the types of symmetry?
Reflective (bilateral)
Rotational
What is the line of symmetry?
Line drawn through a figure so one side is congruent to the other
Rotational symmetry
Rotated less than 360 degrees around a point so that the pre image and image are indistinguishable- then the figure has rotational symmetry
Reflection all symmetry
Fold test or mirror test
Tessellations
Cover an area where a pattern leaves no space uncovered
What is location?
Involves grids, maps and aspects of angles, distance and direction
Key location points
Clockwise and anticlockwise
North and south
Cardinality of place
Language related to distance, direction and position
