Week 4 - The Knee Complex Flashcards
4 movements at the knee joint…
Extension
Flexion
Internal rotation
External rotation
Three functions of the patella..
Reduces patella tendon friction
Protects anterior knee structures from trauma
Acts as lever (increases lever arm at quadriceps)
(Quad) Rectus femoris origin and insertion action
Origin- Anterior inferior iliac spine
Insertion- tibial tuberosity
Action: extension
(Quad) Vastus medialis origin insertion actions
Origin- medial condyl ridge of femur
Insertion- tibial tuberosity
Action: extension
(Quad) Vastus lateralis origin insertion and action
Origin- greater trochanter of femur
Insertion- tibial tuberosity
Action: extension
(Quad) Vastus intermedius origin insertion action
Origin- upper 2/3 of anterior surface of femur
Insertion- tibial tuberosity
(Hams) Bicep femoris origin insertion action
Origin- LH= iscial tuberosity SH=lateral condyloid ridge of femur
Insertion- head of fib and medial surface of tib
Action: flexion
(Hams) semitendinosus origin insertion actions
Origin- ishial tuberosity
Insertion- upper anterior medial surface of tibia
Action: flexion
(Hams) semimembranosus origin insertion actions
Origin- ishial tuberosity
Insertion- posterior medial surface of medial tibial condyl
Define active insufficiency
Muscle shortened to the point where it cannot generate or maintain active tension
Define passive insufficiency
Opposing muscle stretched to the point it can no longer lengthen to allow movement
What is the Q angle
Line of quads (ASIS) to midpoint of patella
Line of patella tendon
Q angle for males and females
Males 12-13 degrees
Females 15-18 degrees
